Matters of The Heart: Made in the Beautiful Image of God

A Valentine’s Day Love Note to Celebrate Your Beauty

Have you ever looked in the mirror and truly marveled at the masterpiece staring back at you? Not in a fleeting, “Oh, my hair looks good today” kind of way, but in a deep, soul-stirring realization that YOU—are a breathtaking reflection of God’s creativity?

Its Valentines Day weekend and of course love is on my mind. But this year, I’ve been thinking about a different kind of love. Love of beauty, beautiful things and beautiful people.

I had a conversation with an artist last week who in the 70’s traveled from the Mid-West, landed in San Francisco and never left. As a portrait artist, she rattled briefly about the diversity of beauty and how she loves painting people of different skin tones in her creations.

Our exchange made me think about the diversity of beauty across the world.

Too often, we get caught up in our society’s narrow beauty standards, constantly measuring ourselves against filtered images, impossible ideals, and trends that change like the wind. But the truth is, real beauty—the kind that lasts, the kind that matters and stands the test of time, is found in the uniqueness of who you are. Every skin tone, every hair texture, every eye color, and even those little personality quirks that make you—they all exist because God, the ultimate artist, chose to design you that way.

You’re designed on purpose.

And darling, when God creates anything, it is never by accident. It is always intentional, always stunning, and always worthy of love.

Let us take a look at the existence of beauty diversity. I hope that by the end of this blog post, you too will have a special love for how creative God was when he designed you.

The Artistry of Skin Tones: A Divine Palette

From deep, ebony hues kissed by the sun to the fairest porcelain complexions, every shade is a stroke of divine artistry. No two people have the exact same pigmentation, and yet, together, we create a breathtaking mosaic.

God could have made us all the same color, but where’s the beauty in that? Instead, He painted us in warm caramels, rich chocolates, golden ambers, cool ivories, and every hue in between. Whether your skin glows like honey in the sunlight or carries the deep, regal tones of ancient royalty, it is good. It is intentional. It is beautiful.

And can we take a moment to appreciate melanin? The way darker skin absorbs sunlight and radiates warmth, how freckles dance across fair complexions like constellations, how every skin tone has its own way of reflecting light? That’s not just science; that’s artistry.

Hair Textures: Crowned with Glory

Now, let’s talk about hair. Curly, coily, wavy, straight, thick, fine, loc’d, braided, or flowing like silk—each strand tells a story. Some hair defies gravity and stands straight towards heaven like a living testimony of resilience. Some hair cascades in waves, rolling like the ocean tides God spoke into existence. Some is straight and sleek, effortlessly elegant. Some is silver-streaked, carrying the wisdom of years lived fully.

Every strand on your head was counted by God (Luke 12:7), meaning He cared enough to design even the way your hair grows. With this knowledge, we can intentionally be grateful for his creative intent with how our hair grows out of our scalps.

Society may say that certain textures are more “desirable” than others but let me remind you—God does not make mistakes. He also doesn’t compare his creations against one another.  Your hair was created with His divine intention. Whether you twist it, wear it natural, straighten it, or let it be free, it is yours, and it is glorious.

The Depth of Eye Colors: Windows to the Soul

Have you ever locked eyes with someone and felt something unspoken pass between you? There’s a reason people call the eyes the window to the soul.

From deep brown that holds the warmth of the earth to striking blue that mirrors the sky, from green that shimmers like the first hint of spring to hazel that seems to shift with the light. Every eye color tells a story. No two eyes are identical. Isn’t that incredible?

And let’s not forget the beauty of heterochromia—when someone has two different eye colors. It’s a rare, stunning reminder that God delights in variety. Your eyes were formed to reflect light in a way that no one else’s can.

The Symphony of Voice Tones

Your voice—the way it rises and falls, the rhythm in which you speak, the richness of your laugh—is another way God expresses beauty through diversity. Some voices are deep and commanding, others are soft and soothing. Some are melodic, others raspy and rich, and all of them are instruments in a divine symphony.

Have you ever stopped to think about how amazing it is that no two voices are exactly alike? Even among family members, there are subtle differences. Your voice—whether you sing, speak, whisper, or roar—was created to be heard. It carries the power to uplift, to encourage, to express love and passion.

The Beauty of Personality: Uniquely You

And then there’s you—the totality of you. Not just your features, but your essence. The way you laugh at animal videos, are interested in horticulture or the way you get lost in a good book for hours.

Some people are extroverted and magnetic, lighting up every room they enter. Others are gentle and introspective, bringing peace wherever they go. Some are natural nurturers, while others thrive in leadership. Some are bold, others subtle. Some process the world through art, others through numbers.

There is no “one way” to be beautiful. There is only YOUR way. And that is enough.

The World Needs Every Shade, Every Texture, Every Quirk

Imagine a world where flowers all bloomed in the same color, where birds all sang in the same pitch, where every sunset looked exactly the same. It would be… dull. Boring.

That’s not how God creates. He is extravagant in His design. Extremely detailed oriented. And if I may say so, He likes to show off what He creates.  Your skin, your hair, your eyes, your voice, your personality—every detail is a signature of God’s handiwork. You were fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14) and embracing your God-given beauty is not vanity—it’s worship. It’s standing in agreement with your Creator and saying, “Yes, I am wonderfully made.”

So, If no one has told you today, let me be the one to say it: You are breathtaking. Not because of how closely you match someone else’s idea of beauty, but because you were sculpted by the hands of God Himself.

So, walk boldly in that truth. Own your beauty, inside and out. And never, ever let the world convince you that you need to be anything other than the radiant, one-of-a-kind creation that you already are.  And the next time you’re out in the world and you see people who reflect the rainbow of Gods creativity- smile, marvel and appreciate it knowing that you and your beauty belong right in that delicious canvas of creativity.

Because, my love, you were made in the beautiful image of God.
